About Us
Owned by the City of Oshawa, and managed by Global Spectrum Facility Management, the General Motors Centre opened in 2006 with a project cost of $45 million. As Durham Region’s premier Sports and Entertainment Facility, the General Motors Centre provides a first-class home to the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League, the Oshawa Power of the National Basketball League of Canada, and the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame.
Since opening, the General Motors Centre has hosted major concerts and special events including Elton John, Cirque du Soleil, 2011 BDO Canadian Open, IIHF World Junior Pre-Competition, Alan Jackson, Hedley, Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships, Selena Gomez and The Wiggles; just to name a few!
The main ice pad in the General Motors Centre is flexible in seating capacity, and can host events which require seating from 1,500 to 7,600. Inside, the General Motors Centre is equipped with an in-venue full-service restaurant, Prospects Bar & Grill, executive suites, special club seating, rental space, and an Oshawa Generals retail store.
The General Motors Centre experienced a record-breaking year in 2010, which included significant increases over the previous year. The building hosted a total of 226,256 guests throughout 2010 which attributed to eight sold out show dates, compared to two in 2009.
The year positively showcased the tremendous effort put forth by the entire Global Spectrum team at the General Motors Centre. Through building relationships within the entertainment industry, the venue welcomed 12 new performances for first time appearances; following their visit, many of them have either expressed their interest or confirmed their wish to return.
The General Motors Centre has received a nomination for “Major Facility of the Year under 8,000 seats” over the past two years at Canadian Music Week, and was recently ranked number 18 in the world by Venues Today Magazine in their “2011 Mid-Year Top Stops” report for venues of 5,001-8,000 capacity!
